On Wednesday 16 October, five finalist teams of students from the UCT Marketing Association competed head to head for the title of Brand. It 2013 champions. This was the culmination of twelve weeks of hard work for the students - including primary research, brand crafting and marketing planning. They presented their journey from insights to brand value proposition development and comprehensive go-to-market plans for Pick n Pay's house brands. The teams comprised students from second year through to honours level, in a mix of disciplines.

This was the inaugural UCTMA Brand. It Challenge and Yellowwood is proud to have been involved from the beginning - in brief design, marking, workshops and sitting on the panel. The level of work from the students was exceptionally high, and it was clear that they had dedicated a significant amount of time to the project - which was voluntary and on top of all their regular work and examinations.

Congratulations to everyone involved! The solutions put forward were smart, relevant, creative and useful to Pick n Pay. We hope the students had fun on this project and built up some useful brand and marketing skills. Special thanks must go to Pick n Pay for hosting the event and providing the marketing challenges, and to the UCT Marketing Association for an excellent initiative to bridge the gap between formal education and the business context - as the Brand Barometer Survey proved, this is exactly what South Africa needs more of!

The winning team, Team JALST, wins iPads from Pick n Pay and a strategy internship at Yellowwood.
